Atlas 10" Model D the original 1936 model with integral "Vertical-type" countershaft drive fastened to the back of the headstock and bed. In this form (apart from power cross feed 10-F introduced a year later) the lathe had reached almost its final evolutionary form and was to continue largely unchanged until 1957 - and the introduction of the heavily revised "12-inch" model.

The flat bed ways of the Atlas are scorned by anyone with a lathe which has inverted V ways (ie S.B.). Of course, when the inverted V-way bed needs to be scraped or reground, it is about 10 x more work than fixing the Atlas - so there is a tradeoff on that. The saddle of the 10" Atlas is awfully light, and the compound slide is ATROCIOUS!

06-01-2019· First, any belt driven multi-speed bench model lathe is going to have the motor and countershaft assembly mounted on the bench behind the bed. By about 1941, pretty much all of the Atlas-built 10" and 12" lathes, mills and shapers came from the factory with gear guards and belt covers.

21-05-2020· The tool post is AXA sized, which is supposed to be good for the 10 and 12” lathes, but I will look into it. I will focus on HSS for the time being but look into other carbide. The lathe runs like a Swiss Watch when not cutting, both quite and vibration free. I have a Starrett Vibrometer and it reads zero deflection when not cutting.

30-03-2018· I have 2 Atlas 10 inch lathes and have for the last 4 years been rebuilding them. As I understand it to be the case, yes, the legs would be original and the wood top as well. I have mounted mine to a 2 inch thick maple bench top. Rigidity is paramount on a “lighter duty” lathe and on that bench top I get results that I am very happy with.
